This is another go at scraping data from Facebook. This time, it’s looking at band popularity by age group (the number of users in the age group who list the band as an interest over the total users in the age group). There are a few interesting points here:
Fall Out Boy, which has been around since 2001, and Fergie, who has been doing a solo act since 2006 both have noticably younger audiences.  The Rolling Stones’ and The Beatles’ curves are surprising considering when they were in prominence.
Most bands seem to have their highest popularity in an age group below 30. Some possible explanations are 1 — older users feel less social pressure to list musical preferences, or 2 — older users have less of an interest in music.
Another point: Facebook users skew young, which means fewer data points as age increases, so those figures are less accurate. Facebook’s ad targetting system offers approximations without margins of errors. Data points for Fall Out Boy and Fergie over the age of 30 seem suspect.

This is a first run at scraping data from Facebook’s ad targeting UI and drawing it on a map.  Rough around the edges (literally), but a good start.

They’re praying for rain in front of the Georgia capitol building.  You know, because of that drought:

“All summer, more than a year after the drought began, fountains sprayed and football fields were watered, prisoners got two showers a day and Coca-Cola’s bottling plants chugged along at full strength. On an 81-degree day this month, an outdoor theme park began to manufacture what was intended to be a 1.2-million-gallon mountain of snow.”

Which brings to mind an old joke that seems pertinent:

A religious man is on top of a roof during a great flood. A man comes by in a boat and says “get in, get in!” The religous man replies, ” no I have faith in God, he will grant me a miracle.”

Later the water is up to his waist and another boat comes by and the guy tells him to get in again. He responds that he has faith in god and god will give him a miracle. With the water at about chest high, another boat comes to rescue him, but he turns down the offer again cause “God will grant him a miracle.”

With the water at chin high, a helicopter throws down a ladder and they tell him to get in, mumbling with the water in his mouth, he again turns down the request for help for the faith of God. He arrives at the gates of heaven with broken faith and says to Peter, I thought God would grand me a miracle and I have been let down.” St. Peter chuckles and responds, “I don’t know what you’re complaining about, we sent you three boats and a helicopter.”
